OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A long-awaited renovation to Wittman Regional Airport is off the ground.
The multi-million dollar project will give the airport its first major makeover in almost 50 years.
Wittman’s Airport Director, Jim Schell, telling FOX 11 “It’s a huge step for the community and the county and the region as a whole.”
He says the $5.5 million will make Wittman’s terminal facility more modern and efficient.
“The new facility is a 12,500 square-foot single-story building designed to accommodate general aviation, corporate and leisure travel that comes in and out of the Wittman Regional Airport. It’s gonna have offices for Basler Flight Service. It will have offices for airport administration, car rental service and meeting space for the community.”
The new facility will replace both the existing airline terminal, built in 1971 and the general aviation terminal built in 1958.
Winnebago County Aviation Committee Chair, Maribeth Gabert says, “This is a culmination of 7 plus years of going back and forth with architects and ideas.”
Gabert goes on to say, “We are in the process of getting more businesses to come to Wittman Field so I think it will open up a lot of opportunities for new businesses and tenants.”
Schell says it can be a big reason visitors keep coming back.
“An airport terminal is the first and last impression a visitor to our community has on arriving by air. We really do want to put her best foot forward provide a modern facility that’s gonna say welcome to Oshkosh welcome to Winnebago County in the Fox Valley region.”
Construction is scheduled to start on Monday. It’s expected to be done by next June, just in time for 2021 EAA Airventure.
Airventure was supposed to start on Monday as well. The flight convention was scrapped in May because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
