APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford has issued a proclamation that declares the city a Purple Heart City.
The designation recognizes Appleton residents who have earned the Purple Heart medal in military service, according to a news release.
The Purple Heart medal is given to military servicemen and women who were wounded in battle or to family of those killed in action.
The city was presented with a plaque Friday by Wisconsin’s military order of the purple heart.
“Remember and honor those warriors who gave their last full measure of devotion fighting for freedom in the service of this country,” Wisconsin Military Order of the Purple Heart Commander George Banda said. “Let us not forget that freedom is not free. The cost is high.”
