MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — A recent poll of Wisconsinites over the age of 50 shows that the older demographic is still up for grabs in the upcoming Presidential Election.
While the latest AARP poll is tight, with voters over 50 preferring Joe Biden over President Donald Trump 49% to 46%, it also hasn’t changed much from previous months.
AARP’s Lisa Lamkins says one specific demographic, however, is pulling hard for one candidate.
“In the 65+ voters, you see an even stronger break for Biden,” Lamkins said.
Biden’s lead increases to 56% to Trump’s 39% among the 65+ crowd.
Lamkins says the 65+ voting demographic has a number of specific priorities. The survey finds that support for Social Security and Medicare unifies voters from both parties. An overwhelming majority of voters from both parties say that they are more likely to vote for a candidate who will protect Social Security, strengthen Medicare, lower drug costs and increase protections for nursing homes.
COVID-19, too, is on the minds of older voters.
“We are seeing the concerns around this issue increasing,” Lamkins told WTAQ. “In September we found that 53% of voters 50+ were worried about catching the virus. In October, it shows 65%.”
That tracks with a statewide increase in virus activity.
The survey involved 1,200 interviews by phone, using registered voter lists with likely 2020 voters in Wisconsin from Aug. 30 to Sept.
