GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Winter Weather is still causing problems for drivers across Northeast Wisconsin.
Despite little new snowfall, secondary streets in Green Bay are still slick.
Green Bay Public Works Director Steve Grenier says it’s so cold that the pavement itself freezes any moisture in the atmosphere, leading to tight, packed ice that’s nearly impossible to remove.
“Even if we were to try and attack it with salt at this point, the temperature is too cold to let the salt activate,” said Grenier. “We would cause more problems than we would solve.”
Green Bay Public Works only salts main corridors, which have been mostly clear, but the secondary roads are getting sand treatment.
“Now the sand isn’t going to melt anything,” Grenier said. “But the sand being ground into that underlying ice pack it does provide a measure of traction for folks.”
Grenier says the only thing that will break up the packed in ice is warmer temperatures.
