MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) — A Manitowoc plastics factory broke ground on a massive expansion this week. Redline plastics opened their new factory only about a year and a half ago, and the 103,000 square foot expansion now underway will nearly double their available space.
The company makes custom plastic molds, many of which are used on boats, ATVs, and RVs.
Redline Spokesman Justin Scruggs says the company has grown fast, and that’s partially because of how people are spending their money.
“Getting UTVs right now, getting RV’s, boats, all of that is very difficult to get because people are spending money on toys,” Scruggs said. And there are a lot of molded plastic products used in those markets.”
That could be, Scruggs theorizes, because of a shift in consumer spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“People couldn’t go out to eat, and all of a sudden they realized they had a ton more money in their pocket because they weren’t eating out every night,” said Scruggs. “They weren’t traveling and doing all these other things, so they started buying RVs, boats, UTVs, things like that.”
The expansion is expected to be complete this fall.
