OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Competency issues have been raised by the attorney of the woman who allegedly shot an Oconto Falls police officer.
Alisha Kocken faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, for the shooting of the unidentified officer on Aug. 6.
In a letter sent to the court, attorney John Carroll said “I have reason to doubt her competency.”
Competency relates to a defendant’s ability to understand the court proceedings and assist in her own defense. Such requests for competency examinations are routinely granted by the courts.
An initial appearance in the case – including Kocken appearing by video conference from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute – is scheduled for Thursday, according to court documents.
Also Wednesday, in what may be a safety measure to ensure Kocken isn’t released, an Oconto County judge issued a warrant for Kocken’s arrest.
Kocken was charged after an incident where police were called to an Oconto Falls home. There was a physical confrontation between Kocken and the officer. At one point, Kocken allegedly grabbed the officer’s gun and shot the officer in the head.
