NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Community First Fox Cities Marathon presented by Miron Construction will celebrate 30 years of racing this weekend.
“When it comes to fall, it’s fox cities marathon,” said Fox Cities Marathon runner and volunteer, John Ebel.
Ebel has Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s. He has participated in all 30 Fox Cities marathons.
Ebel’s diagnosis isn’t stopping him from participating in this year’s race, he has help from My Team Triumph, and three angels will push him most of the 26.2 miles.
“People are ready to have an actual race instead of having the virtual runs that we’ve had for the last year,” said Ebel.
Ebel is looking forward to seeing familiar faces along the course.
The Community First Fox Cities Marathon is expecting more than 3,000 participants all weekend.
More than 2,000 on Sunday alone will race the full marathon.
Ebel says he feels safe participating in the marathon amid the ongoing pandemic.
“We have been working with our local professionals all year long,” said Perre.
Race Director, Tara Perre says in order to have the race they are encouraging runners and volunteers to mask, social distance and use hand sanitizer.
Every participant will get a running neck gaiter.
“Following CDC guidance, right now when you’re outside, it’s completely up to you if you want to mask or not if depending on your vaccination status,” said Perre.
Perre says play a major part in putting on the race.
“This year was harder to get volunteers so we really had to shake every tree, knock on every door. We have plenty of volunteers now,” said Perre.
Right now, the race has more than 1,500 volunteers.
2,300 volunteer roles exist, but some people take on multiple jobs.
“It’s a hometown race,” said Ebel.
This will be a bitter-sweet marathon for Ebel, it will be his last race.
