FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – The Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says Officer Joseph Kurer died due to complications from COVID-19. He was 26.
“Our entire Fond du Lac Police Department family mourns the passing of Officer Joseph Kurer,” Goldstein said in a news release.
“Our love and condolences go out to Joseph’s wife and children and all those with whom he served. We, as a police department family will do everything possible to continue to provide support and comfort to Joseph’s family. Joseph will be missed by everyone here.”
Kurer joined the department in 2018. He served on the department’s Tactical Field Force Team, Honor Guard Unit, Domestic Violence Intervention Team and was certified as a Field Training Officer earlier this year.
In addition, Kurer was an Aviation Operations Noncommissioned Officer with the United States Army, Wisconsin National Guard. Prior to joining Fond du Lac police, he served as a community service officer with the City of West Bend Police Department, according to the release.
Kurer earned multiple honors, including the City of Fond du Lac Police Department Life Saving Award, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
A law enforcement procession escorted Kurer from the hospital to the funeral home late Wednesday night. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Kurer is survived by his wife and two children, his parents and a sister. One of his children was born the night before he died.
