GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The resettlement of the Afghan refugees evacuated from Afghanistan as it fell to the Taliban earlier this year is underway.
Nearly a dozen evacuees and their families are already in the Greater Green Bay Area. They’re being helped settle in the area by the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay.
“We actually are receiving them at the airport, we’re there to welcome them,” said Director Karmen Lemke. “Then we walk through a series of evaluations, and then begin to establish them.”
They’re getting set up with food and housing and are getting help finding work.
There are 11 Afghan evacuees that have already arrived in the Greater Green Bay area from military bases across the country, where the refugees have been being housed.
Lemke says the area can currently support up to 50 refugees.
“These folks are coming here with very limited items, maybe a thing of luggage or two, if that,” Lemke explained.
Catholic Charities is raising funds and collecting donations on its website, catholiccharites gb.org.
