OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Authorities are investigating after a second cat was found suffering from a gunshot wound to its face.
The Oshkosh Area Humane Society said a good Samaritan recently noticed an injured cat wandering in a rural area of Winnebago County and brought it to OAHS.
After an immediate exam, staff rushed the cat to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Appleton.
The cat’s lower jaw was essentially gone and the veterinarian said it looked as though the animal had been shot. X-rays later showed buckshot lodged throughout the cat’s body, indicating the cat had been a victim of animal cruelty more than once, OAHS said.
The cat, now named Richie Cunningham, had surgery to remove the remaining bone fragments, dead tissue and skin. Miraculously, he is able to drink and eat on his own. Richie is now in a foster home where he can rest and recover until he is ready for adoption.
Richie is such a nice cat and we can’t imagine why anyone would have caused him such pain,” OAHS wrote in a statement.
Sadly, OAHS said exactly one year ago, a cat, later named Bernard, was found near Omro with injuries to its nose, sinuses, palate and jaw from being shot in the face. Luckily Bernard survived after getting necessary surgeries and is living a happy life with his new family.
OAHS says law enforcement has begun an investigation. They ask that Bernard and Richies’ stories be a reminder to always report any knowledge or suspicion of animal cruelty or neglect.
Richie’s surgery and treatment are made possible by the Cuddles Fund which assists with costs associated with emergency or specialty medical care.
