GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – You could soon have the opportunity to live on top of Bosse’s News & Tobacco in downtown Green Bay.
The building that houses the 123-year-old magazine shop is only one story, but developers are planning to add additional stories for housing.
Three to six additional stories could be built above the existing structure. Between 39 and 65 one and two-bedroom apartment units would be included, according to city documents.
City staff says additional study is needed to determine how many additional levels will be built.
According to city documents, the building was the former Masonic temple. It was three levels, but the top two burnt down in a fire.
The project is expected to cost between $7.5 million and $12 million and provide an additional $4 million to $9 million in assessed value to the property.
City staff says a skywalk is being considered for between the apartments and the adjacent Cherry Street parking ramp.
The developer would like to start construction in the first quarter of next year.
On Thursday, the city’s Redevelopment Authority provided initial approval to provide an estimated $1.1 million in tax assistance over a 16-year period after the project is completed.
The city council is expected to vote on the plan next month.
