GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Tomorrow is the first Monday of 2022, and a lot of people are kicking off their New Year’s resolutions at the gym.
The YMCA has been seeing their annual uptick in members grow since November.
“In the last month we have really seen an uptick in our membership here at the YMCA. So I think people are planning,” West Side YMCA Director Marcia Sengstock said. “It kind of ebbs and flows, but we’ll probably get a couple hundred new members in here at the beginning of the new year.”
At one point between November and December, Sengstock says there was a four day stretch where 179 new members joined in the Greater Green Bay area.
Some people hesitate to sign up for a gym because of financial stresses, but Sengstock says they’re even running a special to waive those joining fees.
“We don’t turn anybody away for any financial need at all we will work with people in order to make the membership affordable to them,” Sengstock told WTAQ News. “Most of us find that there is some money that we have out there that we’re maybe putting into different resources that we could turn into that gym membership.”
She points out that just 3-4 Starbucks runs over the course of a month would pay for a large chunk of nearly any gym membership.
But even with the deals, some people simply can’t seem to stay motivated throughout the year. That’s why the YMCA offers trainers, programs, and other systems in place to keep people on track.
“The biggest thing is that accountability. When people are make a behavior change, you have to do it for a good 3 months or more in order for it to really start to become that habit,” Sengstock said.
