APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Construction on the Appleton YMCA’s multi-million-dollar parking ramp project has come to a halt.
A concrete span collapsed over the weekend, stopping the work.
Just less than a week ago, Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction – the general contractor for the Appleton project – posted photos on social media, showing a double-tee span being lowered and the progress that’s been made.
It wouldn’t be too long afterward that all that work would come to a standstill, after a double-tee span on the second floor came crashing down.
Nearby businesses FOX 11 spoke to said the collapse happened on Saturday, but they didn’t hear or see anything when it actually fell.
Construction for the Appleton YMCA’s $7.5 million project began last fall.
FOX 11 reached out to the Y for an interview about the mishap that occurred, but they said no one was available and that they still don’t have all the information.
Hoffman’s president did give us a statement, though. In it he says:
Hoffman is investigating the event that occurred at the YMCA parking ramp construction site over the weekend. We are grateful that no one was on site at the time of the incident.
The company says, once the engineers, installing contractor, and supplier have completed the investigation, they’ll be able to release more information.
Additionally, we reached out to the city of Appleton but, because it is a private project, officials said they didn’t want to comment.
One local business told us a police officer was onsite shortly after the span collapsed and was asking nearby businesses if they had any footage showing the concrete falling.
FOX 11 reached out to the Appleton Police Department, but as of Tuesday afternoon, we have not heard back.
We also contacted Miron, the subcontractor for the project.
Company officials are still trying to find someone to connect us with.
The new parking ramp will have three stories and more than 300 stalls.
The project is scheduled to be completed this August, but whether this incident will push that deadline out is unknown, at this time.
