MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With the future of PFAS regulation in question, people in the Marinette and Peshtigo areas will get a chance to talk directly to state environmental officials.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is holding virtual listening sessions on the issue April 20.
The hearing will come a little more than a week after a judge ruled the DNR lacks authority to regulate PFAS, which are sometimes called “forever chemicals.” In Marinette County, PFAS found in waterways have been linked to Johnson Controls and Tyco’s Fire Technology Center in Marinette.
PFAS, man-made chemicals found in a number of products, including fire-fighting foam made by Tyco. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PFAS can increase cancer risk, affect growth, learning, and women’s fertility.
Tyco says it has been working on cleaning up PFAS and will continue to do so.
The DNR listening sessions are set for noon-2 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. Attendees are urged to submit questions in advance by email to DNRJCIPFAS@wisconsin.gov or by calling 1-888-626-3244.
