SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — How do you stop a large military style truck that’s running from police and driving on the wrong side of the highway? The Shawano County Sheriff’s office had to tackle that question during a strange Sunday evening incident on Highway 29.
Lt. John Blaskowski says a man in a large antique military vehicle got into a police chase with officers trying to make a traffic stop…all over a flat tire.
“This is not your ordinary vehicle going down the roadway,” Blaskowski told WTAQ. “We had to think of everybody’s safety.”
That required some out-of-the-box thinking.
“We shut down the highway, the driver would not cooperate. They tried negotiating with him for four hours and eventually he started to flee from us again,” Blaskowski said. “We ended up chasing the vehicle, it was going on the wrong side of the highway. Eventually we used some county plows to get it back on the right side of the roadway.”
Those county snowplows eventually wound up boxing the truck in and immobilizing it. The sheriff’s department then had to pull the driver out to make the arrest. 39-year-old Aaron Renel is facing charges of fleeing, resisting, and endangering safety.
