STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The celebration is underway in Sturgeon Bay, as a new fountain is dedicated at Graham Park on Friday.
The 15-foot tall structure is designed to enhance the waterfront, and pay tribute to the area’s recreation, and rich maritime history.
With water surging around a dark brown metal bow, to the sturdy aluminum sail above, some people say the new fountain is already a family favorite.
“It’s amazing. It just brings tears to your eye. I’m so proud of everybody that did this,” said Debbie Kortbein, Sturgeon Bay.
“I walk everyday, and I walk over this bridge, except in winter, when it’s icy, and I got to go to the “Y.” So whatever’s been done, I’ve seen,” said Terry Kortbein, Sturgeon Bay.
The fountain is titled “Confluence.” Local artist Rob Soukup came up with the concept.
“It was a long, long process. To first cutting out shapes, and bending them, and moving them around, and try to create the shape I wanted it to look like,” said Rob Soukup, Sturgeon Bay. Artist.
The dedication is one of many improvements unveiled at Graham Park. Destination Officials say, an amphitheater, landscaped gardens, table tennis, bean bag toss, and even a game of checkers are expected to enhance the downtown experience.
“We have over two and a half miles of public waterfront, and I think that people don’t recognize that. But everywhere that you see these blue banners along the waterfront, those are all public areas that we encourage people to get out, walk around, and see all the beauty of Sturgeon Bay,” said Pam Seiler, Destination Sturgeon Bay Retired Executive Director.
Meanwhile, the fountain continues to attract a crowd. Soukup says the experience might be based on the weather.
“Just Joy, a feeling of happiness. And on a windy day like today, maybe even wet. A little refreshing water spray,” he said.
The fountain project cost about $500,000, and was paid for entirely with private money, including, donations, contributions and volunteer work.
