GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A plea deal has been reached in a triple-fatal crash, avoiding a trial scheduled to start Monday.
Abdi Ahmed, 23, faces three counts of first-degree reckless homicide for the June 28, 2020, Lombardi Avenue crash which killed Jessie Saldana, Sonia Gonzalez-Guillen and Sonia Gonzalez.
According to court documents, Ahmed plans to plead no contest to three counts of second-degree reckless homicide. That would be a reduction from the original charge of first-degree reckless homicide. At sentencing, the maximum penalty would now be 25 years in prison for each count (potentially 75 years total), instead of 60 years for each count.
The plea questionnaire does not contain any details if an agreement has been reached for what the prosecutors and defense attorneys would argue for in terms of prison time at the sentencing hearing.
The sentencing hearing is expected to be scheduled at Monday’s hearing. The trial was removed from the calendar.
According to the criminal complaint, Ahmed was driving 104 mph (in a 35mph zone) 1.2 seconds before the airbag deployed in his Dodge Charger. Data from the airbag computer module also shows the brake was engaged only 1.1 seconds before the airbag went off. The data shows the car was traveling 84 mph the tenth of a second before the airbag deployed.
