After struggling in the first two games of the series against his employer of 7 years, Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez carried the Crew to a 10-3 romp in the rubber game Sunday at American Family Field. The burly batsman swatted a pair of two run homers in his first two times up as Milwaukee wiped out a first inning, 3-0 deficit putting up 8 runs in the first two frames.
Alejandro Kirk belted a three run shot off Milwaukee starter Chi Chi Gonzalez in the opening inning but Milwaukee answered with three of their own in the bottom half starting with the two run blast from Tellez. The Brewers then put up a five spot in the second, Tellez lifting one over the right field wall but the entire lineup contributed. The top six in the order all at least one RBI in the 13 hit attack.
Gonzalez got through four innings without any further damage, allowing the three runs on four hits. Jandel Gustave worked the next two innings allowing the last two of the Blue Jays six hits. Three more relievers finished if off as the Brewers took the series and wrapped up the homestand with a 42-33 record, good for a one game lead in the NL Central after the Chicago Cubs wiped out a 5-0 deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 in 10 innings.
After an off day Monday, the Brewers are back on the road opening a series in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
While the Brewers got Gustave and reliever Trevor Gott back from the injured list on Sunday, outfielder Hunter Renfro was placed on the 10 day IL with a calf strain. Kolton Wong played seven innings at second base in a rehab assignment with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday, going 1 for 2 at the plate with a walk. He appears close to returning to the big league club and Brandon Woodruff who pitched for the T-Rats last Thursday, is scheduled to come off the IL and open the series against the Rays.
