GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — One firefighter was hurt and taken to the hospital while responding to a two-alarm fire early this morning at a Baird Street industrial facility.
Green Bay Firefighters were called out to Packer City Sales at around 5:05 am to a report of heavy black smoke riding from the structure.
“We don’t have a cause for it yet, but we did have to call the box alarm to the second level for this call just because of the size of the building,” said Green Bay Metro Fire Lieutenant Shauna Walesh. “Being a little bit hotter out and muggy can wear out firefighters a little bit quicker, so having the extra firefighters on-scene was extremely helpful. [It also helped] to back fill some of our stations, so we still had people available to respond to normal emergencies.”
Fire crews from Howard, De Pere, Ashwaubenon, New Franken, Suamico, Pulaski, and Lawrence all showed up to provide assistance.
Firefighters had to take a defensive stance and managed to get the fire under control in about two and a half hours.
No civilians were hurt, damage is estimated at around $1 million.
“It was a pretty significant loss. Typically with structures, [it’s] not all just strictly fire damage, but it could be smoke damage and water damage as well that affects it,” Walesh told WTAQ News.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The earliest a determination could be announced is by the end of the day, but it could likely be a few days before a cause is released.
