LUXEMBURG, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Kewaunee County Fair has the typical things like rides and and food.
There’s also animals. It’s not easy work for Evie Micolichek.
We wash them, we feed them everyday. And for the chickens and ducks, as well as geese, we pick up their eggs.”
She and her pigs, Spot and Dot, are at the Kewaunee County Fair Thursday.
Not too far off, you’d find Colton Mertens. He showed his cow, Beefy.
“This is my first year winning with any of my animals,” he told FOX 11.
The fair isn’t just about the fun: it’s also meant to educate young ones about agritourism.
“We need more kids to start showing so they can start telling their story,” said Isabella Hane. “Why they farm, why they take care of the animals, why we take care of the land, and how it’s only going to grow and prosper from here if we have more kids in agriculture.”
Hane is on the County Fair board. The team of twelve works all year to pull the event off.
Hane tells FOX 11 they aim to bring more visitors from surrounding areas, to contribute to the county fair’s economic impact.
“We have people that are staying in hotels to come and visit the Kewaunee County Fair. They’re picking up food or groceries at the local store. Then, maybe they’re stopping out at the bars after.”
While Hane doesn’t have an exact dollar amount on that impact, the hope is that it continues to grow, and the work starts when the fair wraps up on Sunday.
