DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Door County Candle Company is helping those impacted by the devastating damage in Florida.
The company has also been making a difference for Ukrainians throughout the war.
From Ukraine candles to beachside candles, the Door County Candle Company continues to help those in need.
Owner Christiana Gorchynsky Trapani says a message from someone in the storm’s path, which was shared on Facebook, prompted the fundraiser.
The message reads in part, “I just wanted to show you my primary light source on day #6 of no electricity post-Hurricane Ian.”
“I thought, we already have the candle and let’s donate the profits from that candle to the American Red Cross,” said Trapani. “They’re a great organization, very well known.”
Launching Wednesday morning, over 120 candles have already been sold.
“I did warn everyone this time about this fundraiser before launching,” Trapani said. “It was only 20 minutes, but I still did.”
It reminds Trapani about the start of her popular Ukraine fundraiser.
“I went up to our lead candle maker and said, ‘Oh, we’re at 100,’ and he said, ‘Ok, that’s half of what I made,’” Trapani went on. “I kind of laugh because when Nic (her husband) was making candles for the Ukraine fundraiser that was what he said.”
The lead candle maker, Larry Mickelson, says this time around, they’re ready for a high volume of orders.
“It’s incredibly devastating what happened down there. I’ve seen pictures, and I just don’t know how they can do it, but it feels good and we’re prepared.”
With orders already placed from Wisconsin to Texas, Trapani isn’t putting a limit on how much they can raise. She just wants to help.
“We are now more than a candle shop. We are now a way that we can spark change. We can be change, and we can help people who need it most.”
The fundraiser is going to run until the end of October at least.
