GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Over 500 Black high school and college students across Wisconsin came together Wednesday for the annual African Heritage Emerging Student Leaders conference hosted by African Heritage, Inc.
These students — all referred to as scholars throughout the conference — had the chance to attend a variety of workshops, including topics like Black Excellence, social media justice, coding and college.
AHI is an organization that seeks to support African Americans in Northeast Wisconsin and overall advance the wellbeing of Black people and African Americans.
The organization, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, fulfilled this mission Wednesday through the conference, which it says positions students as leaders.
AHI co-founder and education professor at St. Norbert College, Dr. Bola Delano, says the organization and the conference aim to set up students to “not just survive but thrive.”
The scholars had the chance to explore achievement opportunities — ranging from opportunities that could be taken in high school through college and even their professional career.
The KI Convention Center hosted the event, which was a collaboration between AHI and several schools — including Appleton Area School District, St. Norbert College and Green Bay Public Schools.
