FOX VALLEY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With March here, many are now looking ahead for what’s to come: warm air and sunny skies.
Spring may only be a week and a half away, but it may not feel like it.
Wisconsin is no stranger to snow, even in the spring.
“Since I’ve lived here, it’s been become a lot more normal seeing snow in March,” said Mac Doherty, a Fond du Lac resident.
Doherty is originally from Illinois. He says Wisconsin winters are harsher than his home state.
“A lot of the winds pick up more, and I would say more snow accumulation than back in Illinois.”
January and February are snowier months, but Northeast Wisconsin is more likely to see a major winter storm in the months of March and April.
“Basically, in March we start to see some peaks of summer here and there, but also winter tries to hold on as we’re dealing with right now, and the next couple of days looking at several inches of snow possible,” said Kurt Kotenberg, Green Bay National Weather Service Meteorologist.
He says snow is very common in March.
“We typically average around eight inches of snow or so for the month, and right now we’ve had about two inches.”
But today’s winter storm is anticipated four to six inches…
“We’re tracking on average, maybe a little bit above average if we get another snowfall system, which is certainly possible,” said Kotenberg. “Solid advice would be to not let those shovels or snow blowers get too far away.”
But don’t panic if you’re still in need of snow removal items.
“We’ve been selling a couple of shovels,” said Cathy Stumpf, manager at Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware in Menasha.
Spring items may be taking over the store, but Stumpf says even though they’re not ordering anymore winter items, they still have plenty in stock even in March.
“We have ice melt, we have snow shovels, we have the window scrapers for your cars, snow blowers, parts for your snow blowers,” said Stumpf.
“March, April as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a shovel-able snow event in April,” said Kotenberg.
“I’m preparing to work from home, kind of what our boss has recommended to us,” said Doherty. “But if I do end up going to work, it will just be very slow, very careful on the roads, taking extra precaution.”
Spring is set to arrive March 20th.
