(WTAQ-WLUK) — Five months after a bonfire explosion injured several teens, the recovery continues.
Brandon Brzeczkowski was one of several who suffered severe injuries.
Now after several serious surgeries, Brandon is almost back to normal.
His parents, Tammy and Bruce, have been by his side since day one, when they received the terrifying call that Brandon had been burned on Oct. 14.
“He was classified as burned on 38% of his body. He had skin grafting done on the back of his hands, his shins, and the back of his legs. But he was burned all over the place,” said Brandon’s dad Bruce., “Mobility-wise, he’s almost back to normal, still this physical and occupational therapy in between there but yeah he’s getting close to where he was.”
His parents say the recovery has been long, but Brandon hopefully won’t have many more surgeries after the upcoming one scheduled for next month.
“It looks like he will have additional laser surgery to help release some skin grafting, for his tightness and scaring,” said Brandon’s mom Tammy, “We started this hyperbaric chamber, where he actually gets in this oxygen chamber, he does some deep dives.”
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy treats wounds and other medical conditions by supplying 100% oxygen inside a special chamber.
“He wants to get back out golfing, he wants to get back out to his job. But he’s not that far away from doing that,” said Bruce.
When asked how Tammy and Bruce feel as parents seeing what their son has been through since day one, they say they’re relieved.
“We’re glad to have him. It feels good. Still a little ways to go and can pretty much function like what he was doing before. It’s a big relief. We’re still worried about him,” they said.
Tammy and Bruce say they’re thankful their son is home. They say thanks to Brandon’s strong will, the community’s support, and skilled doctors, they will see Brandon doing what he loves soon enough.
Brandon’s mother is planning to bring in another burn survivor to talk to the area teens about his experience with healing and trauma.
