GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Warmer temperatures bring an increase in a particular crime; catalytic converter thefts.
Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle’s exhaust system and are sometimes stolen because of the metals in them. Green Bay Police Chief, Chris Davis, says there are ways to avoid being a victim of these thefts.
“If you’re not able to secure your car in a garage, at least someplace with really good lighting, or maybe install a motion sensor light in your driveway,” said Chief Davis. “Cameras are always good, especially if they’re visible.”
He says being aware of your surroundings can also reduce these thefts.
“In neighborhoods where people are engaged and paying attention, you tend to see less of this kind of activity.” said Chief Davis.
Police say if you see something say something; crime stoppers will pay double the reward for tips on catalytic converter thefts that lead to identification of a suspect or arrest.
