MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Manitowoc is looking to bring life back to the River Point District.
And with the opening of River North Apartments, the city is on its way to do just that.
The 87-unit apartment building is part of a larger effort to transform 20 acres of a contaminated industrial development site right in downtown Manitowoc.
“Just in the last few years here, we took something that, I tell you, any city in Wisconsin especially, would love to have — 20 acres of undeveloped land right along your riverfront in the heart of your downtown,” said Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels. “This truly is the next chapter of Manitowoc’s downtown, and it’s an exciting one.”
Apart from the apartments, the city is also redoing the wall along the river, putting in a new ADA-accessible floating dock and doing extensive landscaping.
“One of the things that the council and myself really want to encourage was not just all private development in this area but for anyone in the public to take advantage of the beauty of the Manitowoc river and all that we have here,” said Nickels. “So, you’re going to see a lot of public amenities all along this area.”
The $18 million complex is the first development in the River Point District redevelopment plan. But officials don’t expect it to be the last by any means.
