GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Joannes Park was the site of the 4th Annual “Juneteenth Freedom Celebration” in Green Bay on Saturday. “Black Lives United, Green Bay” and the “We All Rise — African American Resource Center” hosted the event.
The event commemorates the day in 18-65 when a Union General arrived in Galveston, Texas and officially declared the end of slavery and the enforcement of the 18-63 Emancipation Proclamation. It highlighted Black business and featured entertainment, inflatables and fun family activities.
“We always say that solidarity is love and so I feel like this is a really great community event for all to really show up and support the Black community and celebrating our accomplishments, our progress, and just really supporting Black businesses that are out here today and coming together,” Stephanie Ortiz, Co-Founder of Black Lives United Green Bay, said.
The Juneteenth federal holiday is June 19th — which this year falls on a Monday.
