KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Kaukauna family continues to wait for answers after the Kaukauna Fire Department damaged their home during what was meant to be a controlled burn.
Homeowner Jaime Schmitt said the fire department took responsibility for the damage, and the city agreed to pay to have the siding replaced. But Schmitt says when the estimates to repair the damage came in, the city’s attitude changed.
The Kaukauna Common Council met Tuesday night to discuss the incident. But after over an hour of closed session discussion, Mayor Tony Penterman said that no action would be taken yet.
The city’s insurance company issued the following statement on the matter:
The City does not need to take a position on this matter, for we are NOT making a recommendation for a claim disallowance which the City board would need to hear and vote upon. This matter is one of purely the value of damages which remains between Ms. Schmitt and me and/or our company. Therefore, the City does not need to take a formal position on the claim; and questions by Ms. Schmitt, her insurance carrier, an attorney representing her and/or a news organization looking for information on the claim handling, should be routed to me.
