WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Several pills disguised as candy, seized during a traffic stop in Winneconne, turned out to be methamphetamine pills laced with fentanyl, police say.
On Tuesday, an officer stopped a driver who was on parole for a past violent felony conviction.
Inside the vehicle, police say they found several pills of suspected MDMA/ecstasy. The pills were contained within a powder-like substance. After several field tests of the pills, they did not test positive for MDMA/ecstasy but rather methamphetamine, mixed with a suspected caffeine cutting agent. The powder tested positive for presence of fentanyl.
Officers also seized a digital scale, several pre-packaged baggies of marijuana, cash, a cell phone and other items of contraband.
Police say it’s important for parents to talk to their kids about these types of pills, as they can look like candy. They come in many shapes and colors, with a variety of different markings, from Pokémon to Mickey Mouse, even social media emblems. Police say while a suspected buyer of these pills would think they are purchasing and using ecstasy, they would have been ingesting methamphetamine and fentanyl.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was arrested and booked into the Winnebago County Jail on a parole violation. Several felony and misdemeanor charges will be referred to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office.
Police say they welcome any tips of suspicious activity residents may witness or hear of, whether within their neighborhood or within a local establishment. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward. To submit a tip, call the Winneconne non-emergency number (920) 582-9944.
