TOWN OF DAYTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A wildland fire burned nine acres of prairie grass fields and pines in Waupaca County.
The Waupaca Area Fire District was dispatched to the fire just after 2 p.m. on Labor Day on State Highway 22, south of West Road in the town of Dayton.
Firefighters from multiple departments, along with the DNR, were on scene for more than five hours, suppressing the fire until it was contained.
Several homes were evacuated as a precaution and no structures were damaged. Residents were allowed to return to their homes once the fire was contained.
Even with temperatures in the 90’s, officials say there were no injuries to firefighters on scene.
Firefighters say you should avoid outside burning when fire conditions are very high and winds are high as well. Dry conditions allow for fires to spread rapidly. Always check the Wisconsin DNR Fire Danger conditions and restrictions page before burning.
