MANITOWOC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One person was killed when a small plane crashed into a pond in the town of Kossuth.
The two-seater Lancair 320 was reported missing on Wednesday night, when the Chicago air traffic control center told the Manitowoc Sheriff’s Dept. that the low-wing aircraft had arrived at an undisclosed location. The National Transportation Safety Board confirms the plane was found Thursday.
The male pilot, who was alone in the plane, was killed in the crash, according to the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Dept.
No details about where the plane was going to or coming from has been released, nor have details about where the plane is registered.
A property owner on Rockwood Road says he heard a crash around 7 p.m. Wednesday. He went out but couldn’t find anything and assumed the noise came from a nearby business. A Thursday morning phone call from a neighbor, who is a retired sheriff’s deputy, prompted a second search. This time, the property owner found the plane nose-down in a pond, in about 18 feet of water. The property owner said it appeared the plane hit some trees.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB, are completing an investigation into this crash.
