(WTAQ-WLUK) — Scammers are continuing to target Northeast Wisconsin residents.
In a Facebook post Monday, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office reminded individuals to be on alert and take precautions to prevent from being victimized by the scams.
According to officials, there has been a “surge” in phone calls where the caller identifies themselves as a member of the BCSO and demands bitcoin payments for active warrants.
Another popular scam hits “a bit more personally” through security breach access to emails. It uses the intended victim’s name, phone number and even a photo of their house. The scam threatens to leak personal information about the victim if they do not provide the requested bitcoin payment.
These scams can come at you personally, emotionally or threateningly. If you receive something that does not appear right, it is likely a new variation of some type of scam. Don’t be a victim, be your own first line of defense!!
Officials warn residents not to fall for the scams. If you receive a phone call or email that seems suspicious, you should reach out directly to law enforcement.
