(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) DAYTON,OHIO – The Green Bay men’s soccer team continued a stellar 2024 season with a win over Wright State Saturday afternoon.
GB improved to 8-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in Horizon action, while the Raiders fell to 5-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in HL action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Luke Nicholson opened the scoring early with his third goal of the season in the 9th minute, giving the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage. His goal proved to be the difference at halftime after GB was stifled for just six shots (two on goal) in the first half. The Phoenix was just as good defensively, surrendering only five shots (two on goal) to the Raiders.
Wright State came out and set a different tone in the second half, tallying four shots within the first 20 minutes. However, just as the Phoenix did in the first frame, GB was able to capitalize on limited opportunities. Following a goal kick by Green Bay, Andrew Paolucci spelled WSU’s defense and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute. Wright State’s Brayden Tester answered not long after that, getting a nice pass from Edwin Espinal-Elvir to make it a 2-1 game. WSU had one last chance to knot the game in the 87th minute, but GB’s Alvaro Rodriguez came up with the save, and GB escaped with a 2-1 victory.
As of the time of publication, Green Bay is in a tie for first place in the Horizon League with Purdue Fort Wayne.
