(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY, Wis. –The Green Bay volleyball team secured its second-straight win against Purdue Fort Wayne Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center in four sets (23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 26-24). Green Bay’s record improved to 7-10 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League action.
Danilynn Schell was outstanding for the Phoenix offensively, leading the squad with a career-high 17 kills. Emma Best was also impressive, finishing with a double-double, 11 kills, and 14 digs. Defensively, Abby Gardner chipped in with 17 digs, and Diane Pichelman had two blocks. Calli Gentry led the Phoenix with four aces as well as 44 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix fell in a back-and-forth first set, losing 25-23 in a game that featured five lead changes and was tied eight times. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the set with 16 kills compared to Green Bay’s 12.
SET 2 | Green Bay fought back from a first-set loss to take the second set 25-23, tying the match at one set apiece. Neither team led by more than four points in a set that featured three lead changes and eight ties within the set.
SET 3 | Green Bay grabbed control of set three from the start, jumping out to a 10-4 lead after a Kurpeikis’ kill. From there on out, PFW never again got closer than five points, and GB closed it out 25-14 to take a 2-1 lead.
SET 4 | It looked like Purdue Fort Wayne might force a fifth set thanks to a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 16-13 lead. However, the Phoenix bounced back to tie the set up at 22 after a 4-0 run of its own that featured three Schell kills. From there, GB outscored PFW 4-2 to secure the 26-24 win and 3-1 match win. Green Bay put together a .419 attack percentage with 15 kills in the frame.
