APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — In a case which took more than nine years to resolve and had trial dates postponed 46 times, Travis Huss was sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail for attempted possession of child pornography.
Huss, 49, previously pleaded no contest to one count of attempted possession of child pornography. Nine counts of possession of child pornography were dismissed.
He was placed on probation for three years by Judge Mitchell Metropulos. Huss’s access to the internet was also limited.
Huss noted the progress he has made with sobriety, and the benefits of participating in the Challenge Incarceration Program.
Huss was charged on July 29, 2015 with 10 counts of possession of child pornography. After a search of a Kaukauna residence, investigators allegedly found multiple images of child pornography on his computer in his bedroom. At the time, he was on extended supervision from drunk driving convictions.
Since then, there have been multiple reasons for delays in the case. Some adjournments were requested by prosecutors, others by the defense.
Huss has had four different attorneys, changing lawyers in 2019 twice and then again in 2020 — one time waiting nearly seven months for another attorney to be appointed, court records show.
There was a mistrial in August 2016. Some adjournments were due to basic scheduling conflicts, and Huss was in prison for a time. The COVID-19 pandemic postponed all trials across the state for months. In most cases, a trial date was set about two months out, but then two weeks before the trial the case would be postponed, with the cycle repeating itself.
