FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A nonprofit organization in Fond du Lac is making a difference for individuals who are down on their luck.
On Tuesday, ADVOCAP held an open house to showcase its new Opportunity Center, which offers services to low-income city residents seeking to overcome challenges like homelessness, unemployment and financial instability.
“A safe, comfortable place to come in and get resources, whether it be employment, housing, mental health services, food share applications, job search techniques, interviewing practice. Pretty much anything to help stabilize somebody if they’re in crisis,” said Brenda Hull, a special initiative manager.
Since opening in November, the Opportunity Center has worked with more than 100 people in total and averages approximately 30 participants each day. Its team members work side-by-side with the participants to break down barriers, connect them with resources and develop individualized plans to address their needs.
“It’s really just providing a step forward for people. A lot of times you see people when they’re in crisis, they feel like everything’s falling apart, and sometimes it does,” Hull said. “We do one thing at a time. If you don’t have any food, let’s get you a food card. If you don’t have insurance, let’s get you medical. If you need to get to a dentist, let’s figure out how to get you there.”
Jay “Colton” Langley is a participant at the Opportunity Center. His friend brought him to the center when he was homeless, suffering from depression and considering taking his own life.
“I came here and I met some great people and they provided me with the information I needed but most of all, friendship. That was really important to me,” Langley said. “Knowing people actually really, truly do care about you — that means a lot.
