(UW ATHLETICS) COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 17 Wisconsin men’s basketball team fell to Maryland in a midweek road trip Wednesday night, with the Terrapins taking the win, 76-68. Maryland found a scoring spark to pull away from the Badgers, outscoring UW 44-37 in the second half.
Despite just a one-point halftime deficit, the Badgers were unable to battle back against a torrid second half from the Terrapins. Maryland shot 7-for-11 from distance in the second stanza to pull away.
For Wisconsin, John Tonje scored 23 points, going 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Steven Crowl added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists. John Blackwell scored 10 points, all coming in the second half.
The teams traded runs in the second half, with each holding a lead during the frame. In the end, a late-game 11-0 run gave the Terrapins a major advantage. A final-minute push from the Badgers brought the team back within six points, but ultimately fell, 76-68.
The Badgers were unable to contain Maryland’s shooting, with the Terrapins going 7-for-11 in the second half. The Terps also went 11-for-14 from the free throw line during that frame, ensuring that their lead would stay intact.
The teams were locked in a defensive battle during the first half. The lead never went above seven points for either team, with each squad facing foul trouble early on. Neither team shot over 40% in the first frame and Wisconsin faced a one-point deficit going into intermission, despite 11 points from John Tonje.
Despite dry shooting spells and first-half turnovers, the Badgers stayed in the game thanks to hustle plays and physicality. UW outrebounded Maryland 39-38, scored 12 second chance points, and outscored the Terps in the paint, 24-20.
