(WTAQ-WLUK) — Tuesday was the slowest day of the year for sturgeon spearing on Lake Winnebago.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 14 sturgeon were speared on the lake, the lowest in a single day this year. Two of those were juvenile females, four adult females and eight males.
On upriver lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts, there were six sturgeon speared: five males and one adult female. The biggest fish of the day came from Lake Poygan, a 107.4-pound, 69.6-inch female speared by Kathy Marshall.
DNR officials say they are noticing fewer and fewer shacks on Lake Winnebago as each day goes by. Because of the decreasing effort, the Pipe, North Winnebago and Winneconne registration stations will remain closed on Wednesday.
Spearing ends Sunday unless harvest caps are met sooner. The closest spearers are to any harvest cap is males on the upriver lakes, where the number is 81% of the harvest cap.
