(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court has denied Steven Avery’s personally written appeal for a new trial.
Last week, Avery sent a typed letter to the court, asking for a new trial, saying he is the “victim of a set up and it has to be fixed now.”
But the court rejected the petition on procedural grounds.
IT IS ORDERED that the motion is dismissed. Mr. Avery is not entitled to hybrid representation in which both he and counsel present arguments to the court,” court records state.
An appeal filed by Avery’s attorney is currently pending before the high court.
Avery, 62, is serving a life sentence for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, a freelance photographer. Avery has maintained his innocence, but every appeal, to this point, has been denied.
Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also convicted. Dassey’s appeals have all been rejected, and he has none pending.
Their cases received worldwide attention with the 2015 release of the Netflix series “Making A Murderer.”
