GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Pope Leo XIV will bring an awareness of the American church to the Vatican, Bishop David Ricken says.
The leader of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay shared his thoughts Thursday after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native, to the papacy.
“He probably thinks as an American,” Ricken said. “He went to Catholic grade schools right in Chicago, high school. He was raised like one of us, and he understands the church and our approach here in the United States.”
Ricken predicted that Leo’s pontificate would carry similar themes as that of his predecessor, Pope Francis, but he would take a different approach.
And at St. Norbert College, Abbot Dane Radecki, O. Praem., of St. Norbert Abbey, released this statement following the news:
With great joy, we Norbertines celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV. Both of our religious Orders, Augustinians and Norbertines, share a bond through the Rule of St. Augustine. ‘The first purpose for which we have come together is to live in unity in the house and to be of one mind and one heart on the way to God.’ (Rule of St. Augustine 1,2)
Pope Leo XIV has the great task of uniting our Catholic Church and our world. His missionary spirit reaches to other cultures, and I hope that leaders everywhere will be open to his efforts toward dialogue and peace.
We Norbertines are educated at the same theological school as Pope Leo XIV. Some of our priests have met Pope Leo XIV during their studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
Our prayers are with Pope Leo XIV as he pastors us and the entire Church.
Paul’s Pantry in Green Bay took the opportunity to remind the community on Facebook why the name “Leo” resonates with them:
We are obviously partial to the name “Leo” here at Paul’s Pantry – in fact, our founder Leo Frigo was named after Pope Leo the 13th.
Pope Leo XIV is the 267th pope.
