GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new recreation area is in what Brown County officials are calling the “home stretch.”
The H.J. DeBaker Eagles Nest Park and Boat Launch is nearly complete.
Crews were busy installing part of a pier Wednesday.
Brown County Parks Director Matt Kriese says the new park features concrete walkways, nearly 100 parking spots, four lanes to launch and more.
“You can fish here. You can view the sunsets. You can have a picnic here, and just really come enjoy the peace and quiet of what’s in our backyard,” said Kriese.
Kriese says Brown County bought the land five years ago, with plans to turn the old Eagles Nest Supper Club into the park.
“Green Bay is our home, and we don’t have a lot of access points. A lot of it is developed. It’s private land. What about those that do not live on the water? And that’s exactly what this site is here for,” he said.
Kriese says the new harbor is more than seven feet deep and provides a safe port during windy weather. He says the new boat launch is engineered to accommodate smaller, 18-22 foot long boats.
“We designed this park so you’re not going to see 30-foot boats or greater out here at this site. One, the entrances are 12 feet wide. Our parking stalls are 45 feet long by 12 feet wide,” he said.
Kriese says that helps H.J. DeBaker Eagles Nest Park and Boat Launch fit now, and in the future.
“Today is today. We can work through all these different things we’re working on, but what about 50 years from now? What about 100 years from now? We know that those that come after us are going to have this site and it’s gong to be held in the public interest,” he said.
Brown County Parks leaders say the boat launch could open in about a week.
