(WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County’s board of supervisors have unanimously approved an agreement between the City of Green Bay and C. Reiss to relocate the downtown Green Bay coal piles.
The piles will be relocated to the former Pulliam Power Plant site; two miles north of where the coal piles have sat the past 125 years, just south of the Mason Street Bridge.
Back in December, C. Reiss said it would be interested in working with the city to redevelop about 10 acres of the land for mixed-use development. The 20-25 acres on the south end of the property would be for light industrial use.
Tarl Knight is the director of the Shipyard district; he’s excited for a coal-pile free future when it arrives.
“I hope it will include places for people to gather, and places for organizations and neighborhoods to plan and present public activities that bring people together over the arts, culture, and community,” said Knight.
Studies have shown the land could garner $150 million worth of new development.
It is expected to take a few years before the Pulliam site has the proper infrastructure to allow boats into the port to unload coal.
When the site is ready, the existing coal piles are expected to be drawn down instead of being physically moved from one site to the other.
