APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Luke Vandenheuvel faces a reckless injury charge for allegedly firing a shot into another vehicle during a road rage incident in Grand Chute.
In court Wednesday, a bond was set at $10,000 cash. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled in the case.
According to the criminal complaint, a motorist said Vandenheuvel cut off him off on Lynndale Drive on Sunday. That driver says he then passed Vandenheuvel, and then “paused” before entering a roundabout. Vandenheuvel followed the other driver then passed him, allegedly firing a shot into the other vehicle.
One witness said the motorist yelled something at Vandenheuvel just before the shot was fired.
Vandenheuvel’s attorney said Vandenheuvel feared for his safety during the incident.
“Luke said he was worried about his safety because of what was happening and added that he knew about not answering questions but continued saying the guy brake checked him four times in a row at a full stop and wasn’t letting him go ahead of him. Luke said he was worried he was going to hit him and worried about his safety, which is why he did what he did. It was less of a rage thing and more concern for his safety. Luke said if he didn’t do anything, he knew he (the other person) was going to cause an accident,” the complaint quotes him as saying.
The other driver told the court Wednesday he wanted an attempted murder charge because the bullet came within inches of his head.
