WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WRN) — Following Thursday’s announcement from Governor Tony Evers stating that he will not be seeking a third term in the 2026 election, Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez is hoping to succeed him.
Rodriguez is the first democrat to officially announce candidacy for Wisconsin’s 47th governor. Washington County Executive Josh Schoeman and corporate CEO and former Navy SEAL Bill Berrien are already in the race on the Republican side.
Rodriguez has been lieutenant governor since 2023. She previously served one two-year term in the state Assembly representing suburban Milwaukee, where she lives.
In a campaign video, Rodriguez vowed to push back against Republican President Donald Trump’s administration.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has also announced that will be “taking steps toward entering the race for Governor” in the weeks ahead. The potential Democratic primary roster also includes Attorney General Josh Kaul, former state party chair Ben Wikler, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes and Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski.
