WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A K9 officer who served Winnebago County for over 10 years has died.
K9 Tim’s death was announced Wednesday in a Facebook post from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
Tim joined the force in the fall of 2013 when he was 2.5 years old and retired in March 2024 following more than a decade of service with two handlers.
“[This] is longer than most K9s are able to serve. His drive and passion for working and overall excellent health afforded us the opportunity to let him remain on active work duty a few extra years, which we are very thankful for,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
K9 Tim was trained in a variety of areas, including narcotic detection, apprehension, tracking, building searches, area searches and handler protection. He was also used regularly on Winnebago County SWAT team calls and served as the “unofficial big brother” to the department’s newer K9s, showing them all the ropes.
After his retirement, Tim continued to reside with his longtime handler, Lieutenant Kyle Schoonover, and his family.
