MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has requested federal disaster support to assist in recovery from historic flooding that pummeled Milwaukee over the weekend.
On Wednesday, Evers announced he submitted a request for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to aid Wisconsin in conducting a formal preliminary damage assessment.
It comes after Wisconsin Emergency Management reported to Evers that initial review at the state and local levels indicated Wisconsin will meet the threshold to receive federal aid.
Officials say the damage assessment is a key step toward Wisconsin receiving a formal presidential disaster declaration and federal disaster relief for storm recovery. A presidential disaster declaration determines which, if any, types of federal assistance can be provided.
“Disastrous storms and flash flooding across our state in recent days have displaced kids and families and damaged homes, businesses, community centers, and so much more,” said Evers in a news release. “The damage caused by recent extreme weather is extensive, and it’s going to take significant time and resources to recover, repair infrastructure, and help support the folks and communities who have been affected. It’s clear we will need additional federal resources and support to do so.”
It is absolutely critical that Wisconsin receives every available federal resource to ensure we can adequately respond and help our local communities rebuild. I am requesting urgent federal assistance and aid from FEMA to support our recovery efforts for Wisconsinites, communities, and our state.
Evers declared a state of emergency across Wisconsin Monday in response to the Milwaukee-area flooding and storm damage throughout the state.
