OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Oshkosh Area Humane Society is packed full with felines and in desperate need of adopters.
As of Tuesday, the shelter has a whopping 151 cats and kittens in its care.
44 of those cats were taken in from two local homes in just the last 10 days. OAHS is also seeing a steady stream of stray cats and owner surrenders, and has a wait list of cats who need to be surrendered by community members who can no longer care for them.
According to shelter officials, redemption rates for stray animals have decreased this year, while surrender requests have increased substantially.
“Due to many factors including economic hardship, shelters across the U.S., including OAHS, continue to be overwhelmed with the number of animals needing their help, and are seeing more lengthy stays for many of their adoptable pets. In the first half of 2025, an estimated 2.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues across the country,” said OAHS in a news release.
Currently, the shelter has 51 cats up for adoption, 79 in foster homes and 21 more on-site waiting for spay/neuter, redemption or space on the adoption floor. There is no time limit on animal stays at OAHS, meaning the shelter relies on adoptions to make room for new dogs and cats.
OAHS is located at 1925 Shelter Court in Oshkosh. It has public visiting hours Tuesday-Friday from 1-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Families who are unable to adopt right now are asked to help by sharing posts from the OAHS Facebook and Instagram pages. You can also click here to make a financial donation.
OAHS is a nonprofit organization that offers safe shelter and medical care to over 3,200 animals each year. It also serves the community by providing low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics and a pet food pantry.
