OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — For the ninth time, UW-Oshkosh has been recognized by the American Association for Men in Nursing as one of the best schools in the nation for male nursing programming.
UWO joins the likes of Duke University, Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt on the list.
“It’s really cool. It’s a really great accomplishment,” said Professor Jason Mott. “We basically have won the award more than any school in the entire country.”
Around 15% of nursing students at UW-Oshkosh are men. Mott says it’s all about setting students up for success.
“I’ve had several students who have gotten positions that they wanted — hard to find positions in cardiac ICUs and things like that — because of their involvement with the Men in Nursing and things like that,” he said.
Students at the UWO College of Nursing said male nurses still face prejudice in the workplace, but the university makes sure they’re prepared.
“Comfort with their provider, whether it’s male or female, people have preferences,” said student Eric Zachek. “I’ve experienced that myself already with working in health care. They go over that fact and they really make it a very open and accepting, welcoming feeling to the program.”
That extends to classmates, who Zachek explained have been more than supportive.
“There’s been no stigma I’ve noticed against males in nursing. Nobody has been kind of uncomfortable or shies away from you. It’s very open and accepting, I feel like,” he told us.
Mott added the college is also working towards helping the health care shortage nationwide with an online program allowing students from across the country to enroll.
