May 27 (Reuters) – Australia’s drug regulator said on Wednesday it was notified by biopharmaceutical giant CSL’s unit Seqirus that it will be discontinuing all strengths of their Benpen injection products progressively due to commercial reasons.
Benzylpenicillin sodium, the active ingredient in Benpen, is an injectable antibiotic widely used to treat bacterial infections following surgery and other medical procedures.
CSL’s vaccine arm notified Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration that the discontinuation will start with the 600 milligrams (mg) strength from 30 November 2026.
“The discontinuations are due to commercial decisions and are not related to product safety, quality or effectiveness,” the regulator added.
“Alternative Australian-registered benzylpenicillin sodium injection brands are expected to be available in the future.”
CSL did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further details.
