Sep 19 (Field Level Media) – New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was home recovering from a concussion on Friday, and the team shut him down for the remainder of the season.
Young was knocked unconscious briefly after an on-field collision with teammate Nolan McLean on Thursday in the 3-0 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to a hospital.
A day later, he was still dealing with short-term memory issues and headaches, Mets interim manager Andy Green said.
Green added that Young was doing “as good as could be expected and hoped for, given what we saw (Thursday) night. … Everything we have heard has been really optimistic from a recovery standpoint, from a getting-back-on-the- field-eventually standpoint. I am relieved. I think everybody is.”
Regarding Young’s long-term prognosis, Green said, “Very optimistic about recovery and continuing to play going forward. There’s no concerns in that space.”
Young got hurt in the sixth inning on Thursday. McLean, the Mets’ starting pitcher, moved toward first base to cover the bag on a dribbler hit by Justin Crawford. McLean was attempting to step over a nearly prone Young when he kneed Young in the head.
Young was down on the field for a long time before being loaded on a stretcher. He gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as he was carted off the field.
Crawford was safe on an infield single. McLean stayed in the game and struck out the next batter to end the inning, the last batter he faced.
The Mets placed him on the seven-day injured list on Friday and recalled Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse.
Young, after going 0-for-2 on Thursday, finished the season with a .266 average, nine homers and 39 RBIs in 103 games.
Young, 31, began his major league career with the Chicago Cubs in 2022 and ’23, then joined the Mets ahead of the 2025 season. In 147 career games, he has a .249 career average with 15 homers and 53 RBIs.
Mauricio, 25, hit .180 with one homer and two RBIs in 17 games for New York earlier this season.
